Naim Qassem’s recent promotion to Hezbollah’s top leadership marks a new chapter for the organization. With Nasrallah’s death, Qassem, a foundational member, now bears the responsibility of leading Hezbollah at a time of intense crisis in Lebanon. For over 30 years, Qassem served as the organization’s deputy, becoming a well-recognized figure in Lebanon.

Born in Beirut in 1953, Qassem’s deep roots in Lebanon’s southern community shaped his understanding of Hezbollah’s core mission. He was a close ally of Nasrallah, working to expand Hezbollah’s influence both politically and militarily. His longstanding service has earned him respect among Hezbollah members and supporters, who view him as a steady figure within the organization.

His election by the Shura Council was conducted according to the group’s internal rules, highlighting Hezbollah’s structured approach to leadership transitions despite ongoing hostilities. Although his current location remains unclear, reports suggest he may have relocated to Iran, Hezbollah’s main supporter, to ensure his safety.

Qassem’s experience may serve him well as he takes on this challenging role. His past speeches indicate he is likely to continue Hezbollah’s commitment to its resistance stance, while he has also called for ceasefires to mitigate harm to civilians. However, his ascension to leader also increases his visibility, potentially making him a target.
