PM Narendra Modi in Italy, G7 Summit Live Updates: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has embarked on his first foreign trip of his third term, arriving in Italy early today to participate in an outreach session at the 50th Group of Seven (G7) leaders’ summit. During the summit, he engaged in discussions with UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The G7 session is set to address critical topics including artificial intelligence (AI), energy, Africa, and the Mediterranean. Upon his arrival in Italy, PM Modi expressed his anticipation for “productive discussions with world leaders.”

Day 1 of the Summit: The G7 leaders’ summit is taking place at the luxurious Borgo Egnazia resort in Italy’s Apulia region from June 13 to 15. This annual summit gathers representatives from Italy, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the European Union (EU). The highlight of the opening day was a political agreement to outline a deal for providing $50 billion in loans to Ukraine, funded by interest from Russian sovereign assets frozen following Moscow’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

India’s Participation in G7 Summits: This marks PM Modi’s fifth consecutive attendance at the G7 summit. India has previously attended 10 G7 summits, making this the 11th. In addition to participating in the summit sessions, PM Modi is expected to hold bilateral meetings with leaders from the G7, Outreach Countries, and international organizations. In a post on X, he emphasized the aim of addressing global challenges and promoting international cooperation for a brighter future. Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra highlighted to The Indian Express that India’s consistent participation reflects the growing recognition of its efforts to address global challenges and follows up on the outcomes of the G20 summit held under India’s presidency last year.
