The United States Justice Department has formally indicted Ruhollah Bazghandi, a senior official in Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), for orchestrating a plot to assassinate an Iranian American dissident in New York City. The indictment, filed in 2022, details a murder-for-hire scheme targeting Iranian American journalist and activist Masih Alinejad, a prominent critic of the Iranian regime.

The Justice Department’s charges against Bazghandi, alongside three other Iranian citizens, revealed an extensive network involved in money laundering and contracting members of an Eastern European criminal organization to carry out the assassination. Alinejad’s outspoken criticism of the Iranian government, particularly its treatment of women, made her a high-profile target.

In July 2022, the plot took a dangerous turn when one of the suspects, Khalid Mehdiyev, was arrested outside Alinejad’s house with a rifle. Mehdiyev’s capture was part of a larger investigation that eventually linked the assassination attempt to Bazghandi and his IRGC affiliates.

This case highlights a broader pattern of Iran’s attempts to silence dissidents beyond its borders. In 2021, US prosecutors also charged four Iranian intelligence officers with plotting to kidnap Alinejad. Tehran, however, has dismissed these accusations as “ridiculous and baseless,” yet the continued targeting of activists like Alinejad underscores the regime’s reach and determination to quash opposition.

In a statement on Tuesday, US Attorney General Merrick Garland emphasized, “We will not tolerate efforts by an authoritarian regime like Iran to undermine the fundamental rights guaranteed to every American.” This indictment serves as a reminder of the serious threats posed by authoritarian regimes to individuals advocating for human rights and freedom.

As tensions rise in the Middle East, this case carries broader implications. With the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the US’s stance on Iranian involvement, Bazghandi’s charges add another layer to the complex geopolitical dynamics between Iran, Israel, and the United States. The recent charges come at a time when both the US and Iran find themselves on opposite sides of a potential conflict, with US officials warning of severe consequences following Iran’s attacks on military bases in Israel.
